Auburn Public Theater
One day, Angela Daddabbo and Carey Eidel, owners of Daddabbo's Pizza, sat down with Sheila Murphy, an expert in feng shui. Hang some white lights, Sheila said, and group all the old family photos hanging on the walls together. These tasks were easy, as was shooing away the storm cloud loitering in the dining room, but then Sheila pointed out something trickier to fix: the vacant building across the street, she said, might be putting a damper on customers' moods. So Angela brainstormed. She could hang a poster in the building's window of Einstein sticking out his tongue, or add some red theater curtains to instill mystery—or she could buy the building and transform it into a theater.
Angela and Carey used to dream about owning a theater, and this germ of an idea, just a passing thought at first, grew too large to ignore. The duo shared their dream with two friends, and although they didn't make any real-estate purchases, they spent the next year producing plays and building the foundation of a great theater company. Finally, they were able to purchase the Auburn Public Theater.
Today, Angela is the theater's artistic director, helming programs that include dance classes, concerts, open-mic nights, and standup shows. The venue also weekends as a movie theater, screening second-run Hollywood features and smaller independent films alike.
