If there’s an expedition exploring the bounds of modern rock, AWOLNATION is at the forefront. The band’s 2011 release Megalithic Symphony mixed atmospheric electronic elements with jolting bolts of good old-fashioned guitar shredding and drum pummeling, all underscored by frontman Aaron Bruno’s gravel-tossed growl. In the platinum single “Sail”—a soundtrack phenomenon heard on CBS’s The Good Wife, Fox’s So You Think You Can Dance, and a roster of commercials—that roar tears until breaking into a soulful croon overtop an infectiously heavy beat, before the song crumbles into lonely piano notes. Continuing their soundtrack success, the song “Some Kind of Joke” adds an element of intensity to the otherwise paperwork-heavy shots of Iron Man 3: Heroes. And the band’s most recent album, Run, features the single “Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf).”
