The ballet is an artful demonstration of rhythm and grace, much like postal workers delivering the mail on roller skates. Witness true artistry with this deal to Ballet West’s “Emeralds” at Capitol Theatre. Choose between the following options:

  • For $20, you get seating for Orchestra 4 or Mezzanine 3 levels (a $45 value).
  • For $25, you get seating for Orchestra 3 or Mezzanine 2 levels (a $55 value).<p>

This deal is valid for the performance on Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., or Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m.

The first ballet in George Balanchine’s Jewels trilogy and the glittering centerpiece of Ballet West’s spring production, Emeralds drapes dancers in diaphanous green tulle skirts and whirls them through choreography that is by turns abstract and heedlessly romantic. Excerpts from Gabriel Fauré’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Shylock underscore a male and female dancer as they circle one another, intertwine, and separate amid a shifting forest of female dancers. From there, the ballet company brings Marius Petipa’s eagerly anticipated Grand Pas from Paquita back to the stage with a soundtrack by Ludwig Minkus before rounding out the evening with Jiří Kylián’s sensual Petite Mort as dancers pirouette over two of Mozart’s most beloved piano concertos.

What began as The University of Utah’s first ballet department in 1963 grew into the Utah Civic Ballet (later renamed Ballet West) under the guiding hand of William F. Christensen, who created the first full-length American productions of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, which New York Times’ dance critic Alastair Macaulay remarked was “one of the best productions I’ve ever seen.” Today, artistic director Adam Sklute, a former dancer and associate artistic director with the Joffrey Ballet, maintains the troupe’s globetrotting reputation while fostering fresh talent with a curriculum he designed for Ballet West Academy.
