The Theme: This program focuses on the many intricacies and difficulties of strings, incorporating violin concertos and string quartets in its explorations.
Notable Soloists: Baltimore Chamber Orchestra’s own concertmaster, Madeline Adkins, will pick up the violin for a virtuoso performance in Pablo de Sarasate’s Introduction and Tarantella.
Highlights: In Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, the composer thumbed his nose at convention, by writing the most difficult parts for viola and cello, letting the violins fall silent. While this may have sprung simply from the composer’s desire to experiment, there’s a more practical theory: his employer, Prince Leopold, played the viola himself.
