Riding the Midnight Express with Billy Hayes

Warning: contains adult language

At first, Billy Hayes didn’t want to tell the story again. Speaking to Newsday, he said, “I thought people have got to be sick to death of hearing this . . . I’ve been telling it forever. Then, I discovered there’s this whole new generation that wasn’t familiar with this story.” But even those who know Midnight Express—either from the best-selling 1977 memoir or the Academy Award-winning 1978 film—are certain to be newly captivated by the tale when they hear it straight from the man who lived it. In Riding the Midnight Express with Billy Hayes, the charismatic Hayes recalls his misadventures as a hashish smuggler and the true events of his five-year stay in a Turkish prison. With a chance to set straight many facts that the film creatively skewed, he weaves a gut-wrenching narrative laden with self-effacing humor, pathos, and a new perspective that has arisen in the years since his experience. As he told the New York Post, “It was the ’60s—sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll. Everything was easy. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t easy anymore.”
