The Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra began when four women started playing string quartets at each other’s homes. After more than 62 years, their hobby has grown into a nationally recognized musical powerhouse. Veteran music director Timothy Muffitt, whom the Los Angeles Times has praised for his ability to make “music move with an irresistible sweep,” leads the orchestra as it ushers ears to end of the year with “Home for the Holidays.” In the concert, the symphony joins forces with its harmonious chorus and honey-voiced soprano Mara Bonde, who dominates solos with the same assurance of a comedian given control of a laugh track. The concert reacquaints listeners to light-hearted holiday favorites such as “Sleigh Ride” and “Let it Snow,” as well as classics that include “Ave Maria” and “Waltz of the Snowflakes,” beefed up to a full orchestral treatment.
