What You'll Get
Much like human history, opera is epic in scale, full of murders and romantic intrigue, and frequently interrupted by deformed men in half-masks and capes. Get in on the grandeur with today’s deal: for $35, you get two tickets to see Opera Under the Stars at Bayou Bend on Saturday, September 24 (a $70 value, a $60 value for MFAH members). Doors open at 7:15 p.m., with the show beginning at 8 p. m. Guests sit on unassigned lawn space, so they should arrive early for the best seats and plan to bring blankets or lawn chairs. In the event of inclement weather, the show will be rescheduled for Sunday, September 25.
Every autumn, the Bayou Bend branch of Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts sets up a stage in a lush, formal garden to regale audiences with a rotating selection of songs and music under the stars. This year, A Night of Edgar Allen Poe sets the raven gazer’s macabre tales to opera, chilling attendees with musical pathways through villainous minds and hearts that can only be heard by guilty consciences and audience members wearing stethoscopes. Set in the lush Diana Garden of the mansion at Bayou Bend, the opera draws spectators to tour the central hall of the 1920s house until 7:45 p.m., as well as to gaze at shrubs and hedges sculpted to resemble outdoor parlors. Guests may purchase refreshments at the event and should refrain from bringing outside edibles, children under the age of 13, and CliffsNotes.
