Oscar D’Leon

Oscar D'Leon performing "Llorarás" at The Conga Room

If there's a fountain of youth, it can be heard bubbling in Oscar D'Leon's music. Onstage, the 69-year-old Venezuelan legend sings, shimmies, and shakes maracas, practically levitating with an excitement that belies his age. Such exuberance has earned him the nicknames "The Devil of Salsa," "The Pharaoh of Salsa," and "That Guy Who is Really Good at Salsa." He first earned these monikers as the singer for the influential '70s group La Dimensión Latina, with whom he helped escort salsa into the American mainstream via the immortal hit "Llorarás." Later, Oscar's gripping voice led to solo stardom in the international Caribbean music scene. Live, the entertainer casts his festive tenor over the crowd with gusto, using the microphone more as a prop than a necessity. While he breaks away from the stand to dance and extinguish his shoes, his backing band sizzles with bursts of horns, percussion, and piano. Audience members often execute their own fancy footwork, helping to build a sense of kinship among themselves. Also contributing to the communal atmosphere is the performance's part in Bud Light's ambitious "50/50/1" concert series, in which the magnate sponsors 50 concerts in 50 states, all in one day.
