A summer collegiate baseball team and three-time reigning champions of the Ripken League, the Bethesda Big Train give local baseball fans plenty to cheer about under the summer’s warm evening sky. In its 13-year existence, the club has helped launch the professional careers of 99 ballplayers, including current MLB shortstop Brian Dozier. Consisting of players from colleges such as George Mason University and UNC–Wilmington, the 2012 team looks to continue both the Big Train’s tradition of winning and its ongoing legacy of being role models to younger players, showing them that they can play baseball at a high level and still put their studies and right to wear sweatpants to class first.

During the first-ever Star Wars Night, actors dressed as the film franchise’s iconic characters—whether Light, Dark, or Puppet—roam around Shirley Povich Field, and for Baseball History Night, ESPN baseball analyst Tim Kurkjian will be on hand to play baseball trivia with fans as well as provide a scorekeeping tutorial in the picnic pavilion.
