Big Dummy: Me & My Old Man
In Big Dummy: Me & My Old Man, Mary Dimino recounts her relationship with her dad—a surprisingly complicated one for such a simple man—with equal parts sarcasm and warmth. A factory worker who makes the chocolate crunchies in Carvel ice cream cakes, looks like Elvis, and acts like Forrest Gump, her father’s straightforwardness causes Dimino to think she’s outgrown him at the ripe old age of 11. Then, in a strange turn of events, she promptly realizes he just may be the smartest man alive.
That lends a sense of sweetness to Dimino’s wit, which earned her a United Solo award (in addition to writing Big Dummy, she’s the show’s solitary performer), and praise from critic Hy Bender, who wrote “This is the only production of [The Fringe Festival] that made me cry… Considering this is a comedy filled with laughs, that’s an extraordinary achievement.”
