Fed up with being treated like a kid, 12-year-old Josh Baskin whispers to Zoltan—a genie in an arcade—wishing that he were big. To his simultaneous terror and amazement, he awakens the following morning as a boy in a grown man’s body. With the help of his best friend, Billy, the only one who knows of Josh’s strange predicament, Josh embarks on adventures in his new skin, leading to a job at a toy company and a burgeoning romance with a woman twice his age. As homesickness and the woes of accidental adulthood set in, Josh embarks to find the Zoltan machine and get his young life back.
Based upon the 1988 film, the 1996 Broadway production—which received four Tony nominations, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Choreography—and the 1997 touring version of the show, this performance strips the story down to a brisk 70-minute clip. Adapted and intended for young audiences aged 5 and older, the musical eschews the movie’s racier humor moments and the in-depth discussions about normal biological growth rates and the physics of wishes.
Adventure Theatre MTC’s proscenium echoes the Manhattan skyline as set designer Elizabeth McFadden bathes the backdrop with geometrical flats. Andrew Griffin’s inventive lighted panels whisk audiences to Josh’s bedroom, his posh New York office, and a carnival. The stage floor is swathed in swirling piano keys, and the costume design encapsulates the colors of childhood and the drabness of adults.
This isn’t me!
What’s this foot?
I know my foot.
And this is not my foot.
This isn’t me!
I’m too tall to fit my bunk.
And my favorite shirt has shrunk.
