For more than 35 years, The Lyric Stage Company of Boston has been mining tears and guffaws from audiences with an eclectic lineup of classics and contemporary works. Every year, 40,000 drama junkies, including 2,000 season-ticket holders, flock to the theater’s intimate performance space, where no seat is more than 35 feet from the stage to facilitate quick and easy group hugs between audience and cast. During the 2011–2012 season, Huck Finn drifts down the Mississippi and into the hearts of audiences in Big River, an adaptation of Mark Twain’s classic that fuses the novel’s timeless humor with a bluegrass-tinged soundtrack courtesy of Roger Miller. The production is helmed by Lyric Stage Company producing artistic director Spiro Veloudos, whose theatrical prowess and commitment to casting actors instead of stringless marionettes have earned him numerous honors, including the 2006 Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence.
Or, rounds out the fall, and is playwright Liz Duffy Adams’s comedic homage to the first lady of the stage, Aphra Behn, who entered the world of showbiz after exchanging the smoke screens of spyhood for an equally potent array of literary devices. Ain’t Misbehavin’ keeps the good times rolling with music by legendary jazz pianist Fats Waller and performances that capture the in-your-face exuberance of the Harlem Renaissance like a pop-up book of Langston Hughes poems.
All general theater seating is first come, first served.
