Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
Although it's long been a classic of American literature, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn spent a century languishing under one cruel defect: a lack of bluegrass and country songs. To remedy that, country legend Roger Miller penned Big River, a musical adaptation of the epic story. Fleeing his abusive father and stifling foster family, the titular rebel takes to the Mississippi in the company of Jim, an escaped slave. The duo heads down river, evading their enemies, teaming up with a pair of con artists, and searching for their respective freedoms along the way. Dominating the Tonys when it debuted in 1985, the show's deft mix of comedy and pathos charmed critics, which earned it trophies for Best Musical, Best Book, Best Original Score, and the seldom-awarded Best Musical Adaptation of a Mark Twain Novel.
An Egyptian art-deco style anchors the Cameo Theatre, luring wandering eyes with polychrome accents, gilt columns, and a sphinx that permits entry only after guests solve a riddle. A surviving artifact of the 1940s, the theater first opened as a home for vaudeville acts and movies but has since filled its stage with a diverse roster of legendary performers from B.B. King to Metallica, and it now regularly hosts theatrical productions.

“Sleeping beauty was a good performance but the bad characters were way to scary for my 4 year old. The way the faces were painted was pretty scary.”
“Great way to introduce children to what theater is like. Staff was very friendly!”
