The Great White Way has been illuminated by such classic shows as Annie, Monty Python's Spamalot. 42nd Street, and On the Town. The man behind some of their magic? Music director Todd Ellison—creator of Broadway Rocks—who has lent his baton to those musicals and many more. Saluted by The New York Times as one of "Broadway's electric conductors," Ellison has directed ensembles in front of stages including Radio City Music Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln Center. He also served as the music director for the legendary EGOT-winner Marvin Hamlisch—yet another feather in a very plumed hat.
Ellison takes the spotlight for a special performance at the State Theatre, directing a full band to woo audiences with Broadway Romance. The enchanting revue showcases classic musical valentines performed by a dream team of signing ringers. Broadway-sourced vocalists include Klea Blackhurst of Hello, Dolly, Keith Spencer of A Little Night Music, and Peter Lockyer of Les Miserables, whose performances allow onlookers to soak in the best of Manhattan without worrying about running into King Kong.
State Theatre New Jersey
The State Theatre New Jersey was saved, as its website states, from "the ravages of time." Built in 1921 as a vaudeville and silent-film palace, the venue fell on hard times in the 1970s. In 2003, however, a $3 million renovation restored the State Theatre New Jersey to much of its original glory, as crews painstakingly rehabbed the ornamental plaster, terracotta exterior, and actor holding cells. Inside the theater, a stunning chandelier sparkles more brightly than ever below the venue's signature dome.
