It may be winter in 1930s Berlin, but in the infamous Kit Kat Klub, the temperature is always hot. Every night, The Master of Ceremonies and his star attraction, singer Sally Bowles, encourage the crowd to “leave your troubles at the door” as a raucous ensemble delights it with bawdy songs. But as the Nazis come to power and Sally falls into a tempestuous romance with a young American writer who moves into her boarding house, the decadence of Berlin nightlife may not be enough to keep those troubles waiting at the Kit Kat’s door. The darkening times also invade the music, which shifts from the lascivious joy of “Willkommen” and “Don’t Tell Mama” to the martial “Tomorrow Belongs to Me” and the doomed, defiant “Cabaret.”
Inspired by Christopher Isherwood’s short novel Goodbye to Berlin, Cabaret swept up eight Tony awards after bursting onto Broadway in 1966—and then five more in 1998 when director Sam Mendes and co-director/choreographer Rob Marshall staged an acclaimed revival that helped fast-track the careers of Alan Cumming, Natasha Richardson, and Ron Rifkin. Mendes and Marshall have reunited that same creative team for this direct-from-Broadway staging, which has been hailed as “divinely, dangerously decadent” (New York Times) and “a Broadway jewel in all its glittering glory” (Time Out New York).
