The Scouting Report
This summer, Canada’s Men’s National Team will set out on the long road to the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia with a home-and-away series against Dominica. The second leg of that series will unfold on Canada’s home turf at BMO Field on June 16; the aggregate winner of the series’ matches will advance to the next round of the CONCACAF preliminary competition scheduled for late August and early September. The Canadian squad figures to hold a slight advantage over the scrappy but inspiring Dominica club, whose roster features amateur players who work as gardeners, construction workers, and teachers.
Though Canada has traditionally been a hockey country, support for its national soccer teams continues to grow on the heels of the record-setting FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 staged from coast-to-coast. In addition, 2016's Canada vs. Mexico match at BC Place set a record attendance of 54,798. And Canada’s women's national team recently won back-to-back bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 summer games.
