The Scouting Report
Taking the pitch for the first time since a two-game stint in Qatar in late March, Canada’s Men’s National Team returns home for an international match with Costa Rica. Though they come from opposite ends of the CONCACAF region, the two squads share a competitive familiarity, meeting a total of 18 times with the Canadian squad posting a record of 4-7-7. Though this friendly has no bearing on World Cup qualifying or CONCACAF standings, the Canadian side will use the experience to prepare for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they could face Costa Rica again, only with higher stakes and a more bedazzled soccer ball. FC Edmonton head coach Colin Miller returns as Canada’s interim coach for the game for the first time since January, when he led the team to a scoreless draw against the United States in Houston, Texas.
Though Canada has traditionally been a hockey country, support for its national soccer teams continues to grow on the heels of the record setting FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015 staged from coast-to-coast. In addition, last year's Canada vs Mexico match at BC Place set a record attendance of 54,798. Canada’s Women's National Team recently won back-to-back Olympic Bronze medals at the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Summer Olympics
