German immigrant Bruno Richard Hauptmann has been convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh’s infant son. The play opens moments before his execution in 1936, but flashbacks reveal the twisting path that lead to this grisly tableau. Concerning itself more with the method and motivation of the court’s ruling than with Hauptmann’s guilt or innocence, the play finds uneasy parallels between this past scandal and the modern political climate. The taut drama comes from the pen of John Logan, the Tony-winning playwright of Red and the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Gladiator and The Aviator.
The Candid Theater Company
The mission is in the name: since its founding in 1998, The Candid Theater Company has focused on staging dramas that address universal human experiences with unflinching honesty. That goal is enacted through newly developed plays, as well as dynamic productions of existing works. And, believing "that theatre and all the arts should be accessible to everyone," the company stages those plays at an eclectic variety of venues—their portable fourth wall has been raised at bars, churches, and prisons. It's an unconventional approach that has won the group plenty of praise from audiences and critics alike.
