The Scouting Report
The Golden Griffins hockey roster features the second-largest freshman class in the country, but it’s not lacking in experience. That’s because senior Ralph Cuddemi has returned to lead the squad, following an excellent junior campaign in which he tallied 22 goals—just one goal shy of a school individual-season record. A larger record still stands within his reach, though. If Cuddemi scores as many goals as he did last season, he will break the school’s all-time career goals record and may have a chance to get a whole faceoff circle named after him.
For its part, the men’s basketball team started making waves before the season even began, when junior forward Phil Valenti was named to the preseason all-MAAC team. The accolade comes on the heels of a sophomore campaign in which Valenti established himself as one of the league’s premiere passing post players. He’s also the Golden Griffins top returning scorer and a key piece of the team’s plan to summit the MAAC this season and plant the school’s flag atop the second ‘A.’
Canisius College Golden Griffins
A Golden Griffin emblem presides over Canisius College’s 20 sports teams, which traverse grass, water, and hard court in search of victory. As part of the NCAA Division I’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), Canisius’s athletes face off against other East Coast schools including Marist College, Niagara University, and Loyola University Maryland. From the stands, a sea of blue and gold cheers on the men’s basketball, hockey, and lacrosse teams, the women’s soccer, softball, and volleyball teams, and the adjunct professors’ annual soapbox derby.
