The Scouting Report
When the Carolina RailHawks announced their new owner and chairman Steve Malik last October, it was good news for fans—because Malik is a fan himself. As he told The News & Observer, “I’m in it for the long run… I think the area has a lot of potential for soccer, and I want to see it achieve it.” If his work in the offseason is any indication, Malik is a man of his word. Beyond just the front office, the team has seen massive changeups from the top down, including the addition of forward Brian Shriver, NASL’s 2013 Golden Boot winner, and midfielder James Marcelin, a member of the 2015 NASL Best XI. But the slew of new faces indicates more than a renewed investment in Carolina soccer—it also lets the team psych out their early opponents by making them think they’re a team full of scary shapeshifters.
