A play within a gallery within a rabbit hole of deception, Caught causes the audience to question not only the pieces of the plot, but the structure of theatre and art itself. Written by the internationally award-winning Christopher Chen, the piece begins in an art gallery, where audiences are encouraged to mingle with curators and artworks from the Xiong Art Gallery. Then dissident artist Lin Bo, the subject of a recent New Yorker piece, takes the stage to lecture on his stint in a Chinese prison. Soon, though, it’s revealed that Lin Bo is actually a fraud, a performance artist, and the onstage action switches to a debate about Western appropriation of other cultures. It’s dizzying, and often challenging, but manages to bring a sharp sense of humor, earning it fans such as writers for Philly.com, who called it “one of the smartest, most cynical, heartwrenching, brainteasing comedies.”
