Igudesman & Joo – A Little Nightmare Music
A hush falls on the concert hall, two accomplished musicians take the stage, and what follows could only be called chaos. A Little Nightmare Music, says Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones, “brings surrealism to the concert hall and takes its trousers down.” Throughout the show, violinist Aleksey Igudesman and pianist Hyung-ki Joo set out to create a new generation of classical-music lovers, and to do it they construct a madcap comedic romp. At one point, Joo finds his piano suddenly locked, requiring the swipe of a credit card for access, and Igudesman nods off only to awake in the middle of Riverdance. The pair also reinvents classic-pop hits for the concert hall, turning “Ticket to Ride” into an operetta and adding a dose of Russian pomp and circumstance to “I Will Survive.” Their antics aren’t limited to concert halls, either—the pair have a lively YouTube channel, where they’ve racked up more than 35 million views from approximately 71 million eyes.
Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra
Like many orchestras, the Cape Cod Symphony started small. More than half a century ago, local musicians gathered into a community orchestra to breathe life into the music they loved. Today, though, the CCSO is one of the largest orchestras in Massachusetts. Lead by Artistic Director Jung-Ho Pak, 75 musicians—regularly joined by world-class soloists—enrich surrounding music lovers by putting on 10 classical concerts, 11 pops concerts, and a special New Year’s Day performance. They also commit themselves to education, hosting free concert talks and master classes to help inspire interest in music and maybe one day bring the periwig back into style.
