Local radio station Power 98.3 conjures a night of explosive hip-hop by summoning the towering presences of Kendrick Lamar, The Game, and Ca$h Out to the Celebrity Theatre. By the time he was 16, Kendrick Lamar had made a record deal with Top Dawg Entertainment on the strength of his debut mixtape. Since then, the hip-hop artist from Compton has worked with stars from Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre to Talib Kweli and Lady Gaga, and has released a collection of singles, as well as his first studio album, Section.80, to critical acclaim. During his live performances, Lamar transfixes crowds with his palpable confidence and swagger. Whether traversing the stage or materializing in the sound booth, he incites the audience to sing and rap along to hits such as “Swimming Pools (Drank),” a hypnotic piece on the seductive, sometimes dangerous nature of alcohol that showcases his rapid-fire lyrical style.
Fellow Compton native The Game began rapping in 2001, using his rough childhood to craft bold freestyles. His rhymes caught the ear of Dr. Dre, who signed him in 2003 and executive-produced his debut, The Documentary, in 2005. After two full-length albums and threats of early musical retirement, the rededicated MC began recording his latest release, The R.E.D. Album, which placed the artist back into the spotlight. Ca$h Out, a 22-year-old rapper, opens the evening with party-rap hits such as “Cashin' Out,” a song that climbed 2012's summer charts largely because of a viral video featuring LeBron James rapping along to the cut while celebrating the Miami Heat's championship victory and freshly febreezed locker room.
On November 21, guests return to the Celebrity Theatre for the Pre-Thanksgiving Comedy Slam, which warms up stomachs for feasts by inducing hearty belly laughs. Comic and radio personality Hope Flood delivers a rib-tickling set fueled by audience members' responses to questions about marriage, children, and employment. Best known for appearing on 10 seasons of BET's ComicView, she wins over crowds with tales of awkward sexual experiences and relationships with people of different astrological signs. Actress, singer, and comedienne Luenell also takes the stage, charming audiences with a bold sassiness that earned her a guest appearance on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and a small role in the 2006 blockbuster comedy Borat.
Celebrity Theatre's distinctive in-the-round construction keeps show-goers close to the action, with no seat more than 70 feet from the performers. The slowly rotating stage ensures each audience member can bask in singers' flashing smiles and search the backs of their heads for bonus flashing smiles.
