"Ballet Off Broadway"
Ballet Victoria’s troupe of internationally experienced ballerinas collaborates with a trio of Canadian choreographers for an evening of graceful storytelling. Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time inspired the program’s first piece, which uses scores by Debussy to delve into the history of human expression. Later, “Belgian Songs” incites dancers to twirl to the music of Jacques Brel and the choreography of Paul Destrooper as the stage floods with waffle batter. The ensemble takes on the art of tango during an homage to Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla. The program’s nod to Broadway becomes an emphatic full-body spin in the second half, when the dancers use emotionally evocative movement to tell the tale of an aging Broadway actress coaching another performer whose own star is on the rise.
All of the riveting pieces reverberate through Centennial Theatre’s grand auditorium, which has housed all forms of imaginative entertainment, from traveling troubadours and unicorn orchestras to comedic romps and children's theatre, since opening its doors in 1966.
