A classic children’s tale gets cast into the capable young hands of a corps of dancers ages 4–18, selected from the Center for Ballroom & Dance’s Illinois Youth Dance Theater. An ensemble of dozens sets the stage aswim with vibrant sea life, from the enormous claws and antennae of a lobster trio to spooky marine phantoms to the title character herself, a sprightly, sea-bound lass who yearns for the human legs she needs to attract her beloved prince and complete the other two parts of a triathlon.
The corps has performed the piece in several past productions, building up a repertoire of fluid choreography surrounded by stunningly elaborate costumes and professional-quality sets. Globetrotting guest faculty and artists help prepare the young dancers for careers on ever-larger stages.
