Last Friday, the Charleston Battery were all but depleted. Visiting the Rochester Rhinos in the semifinals of the 2012 United Soccer League Pro playoffs, the Battery trailed 1–0 with one minute left to play; they’d been held without a goal for 89 minutes, in part, because of a pair of missed opportunities by substitute forward J.C. Mack. Just as Rhino fans were beginning to strap on their horns in celebration, Battery midfielder Tony Donatelli headed a ball past the keeper, forcing overtime. After another 30 scoreless minutes, the match came down to seven nerve-racking rounds of penalty kicks that ended with a moment of redemption: a howitzer rifled into the top of the net from the foot of J.C. Mack, earning the Battery a trip to the championship against the Wilmington Hammerheads.
Named after the military fortifications that once protected the Carolina coast’s precious stores of 9-volts, Charleston’s soccer club attempts to bring Europe’s practiced and precise brand of soccer across the Atlantic, their cleats sharpened by annual exhibitions with teams from the English Premier League. With a roster led by the Scottish midfielder Nicki Paterson—who scored a team-high 11 goals in 28 games this year—the team will pursue its fourth league title amid a human mosaic of yellow and black at Blackbaud Stadium, which channels the vibes of British football stadiums with clear sight lines and, of course, an English pub, The Three Lions.
