The Scouting Report

Though this season has been the Chicago Fire’s strongest in the post-shootout era—tying the team record with 17 wins and 57 points—strong showings from rivals Sporting KC, D.C. United, and the New York Red Bulls has forced Chicago into the Eastern Conference’s 4th spot. As a result, the team must win a high-stakes knockout match against the Houston Dynamo to stave off elimination and advance to the semifinal against Sporting KC. Still, the Fire enter the game with the home-field advantage and an unbeaten regular-season record against the Dynamo and their electrified cleats.

Throughout the regular season, sure-handed goalie Sean Johnson posted 108 saves—the third most in the league—protecting the net as carefully if it were an endangered quino checkerspot butterfly. Leading the offense, forward Chris Rolfe scored a team-high eight goals in the regular season, aided by forward Patrick Nyarko’s seven assists.<p>
