The Scouting Report
Though they’ll be spending much of the season’s final two months on the road, the Fire take to the home pitch at Toyota Field on August 26 and square off against one of the Eastern Conference’s better teams in the New York Red Bulls. That evening, the Fire will attack the net with an offense led by newcomer David Accam, who leads the team with five goals. Second-year midfielder Harry Shipp also figures to play a major role in the Fire’s attack: after leading the team in assists last season, the Lake Forest native is once again exhibiting a knack for sharing with a team-best five assists through 20 games.
Kindled on October 8, 1997—the 126th anniversary of Chicago’s infamous blaze—the Chicago Fire played their first Major League Soccer season in 1998 and nabbed its first and only MLS Cup in that inaugural season. Located in Bridgeview, Toyota Park hosts each home game, its grounds spacious enough to seat 20,000 and fertile enough for planting new soccer-net saplings each spring.
