The Scouting Report
Though 2013 was the Chicago Wildfire's first-ever season, they made their presence known in the American Ultimate Disc League behind an impressive 14-3 record. This year's club is off to promising start toward recapturing that success. On May 23, the Wildfire face the Madison Radicals in a showdown between the Midwest Division's top two teams. In their quest to crush their division rivals, the Wildfire will turn to team captain and two-time AUDL MVP Jonathan "Goose" Helton and first-team all-AUDL player AJ Nelson. ESPN3 will broadcast the game, shining a spotlight on a contest that will determine which team is the division's best and which team has to do the winners' laundry for a week.
In 2013 the Wildfire brought professional ultimate disc—a sport that combines elements of football, basketball, and soccer played with a disc—to Chicago. The team excelled from its inception as an expansion team in the American Ultimate Disc League, posting a division-best 14-2 regular season record before ending their campaign in the first round of the postseason. The AUDL—which plays with referees on an expanded football-sized field—began with eight teams in 2012 and, much like a sponge in a humidor, it has quickly expanded to more than double its initial size.
