Pirouetting toward its 50th year, the historical Cincinnati Ballet launches its 2011–12 season with the classic 19th-century ballet Giselle, choreographed by Devon Carney. The locally based company nimbly jumps into the classical tragedy based on a German tale of vengeful female spirits betrayed by their past lovers, which causes them to terrify men with haunting dances and glow-in-the-dark pointe shoes. One of the spirits, the peasant girl of the ballet’s title, struggles from beyond the grave to save the still-living aristocrat of her affection from the other specters. Groupon buyers enjoy this tale of deceit, love, and forgiveness from plush, burgundy seats in the balcony, granting unobstructed views of choral dances, lyrical solos, and stagehands doing the charleston in the wings.

As audience members file to their seats, they can admire the gold rococo accents and corinthian columns that frame the elegant foyer of the 3,516-seat Springer Auditorium, originally built in 1878. Paneled ceilings and a colossal chandelier contribute to the dramatic ambiance, as ballet fans young and old unwrap hard candies, turn off cell phones, and remove kazoo pacifiers in preparation for the opening musical swell.

Cincinnati Ballet

Founded in 1963 at a local YMCA, the Cincinnati Ballet grew into a major regional company by adhering to its mission to express the human experience through dance. Today, it continues upholding that vision by housing resident artists who entertain audiences with dance performances of both classic and original work. Beyond supporting local audiences and their right to clap, the Cincinnati Ballet also seeks to nurture artists through the Otto M. Budig Academy. There, a professional faculty trains aspiring performers at all skill levels. These training opportunities are supplemented by outreach programs such as CincyDance!, which provides free training and dance attire to children.

Two tumbs up!
Melissa C. · February 8, 2013
I only wish the classes weren't so late, but thoroughly enjoy them.
Karen J. · February 6, 2013
I hadn't been in a dance class in about seven years but I had a great time and a great workout in adult intermediate ballet. The facility was so nice and well kept, and the staff was amazingly friendly! Our teacher (I didn't catch her name) had a great sense of humor and helpful tips. She kept the class very fun.
