1957’s Cinderella was always a hybrid of a timeless rags-to-riches story and modern sensibility. Today, all the classic songs are still there, while a new production in Los Angeles, directed by Chance Taylor, brings the ultimate fairytale to new audiences.
The tale of the titular young heroine, Ella, opens with a portrayal of her servitude under her wicked stepmother and sisters after her father dies unexpectedly. When the women head to the prince’s bride-searching ball, they leave Cinderella scrubbing the floor, but her fairy godmother soon rescues her from squalor by transforming her rags into a flowing gown and her shoes into structurally sound glass slippers. When midnight comes, the dream fades away and Cinderella flees in disgrace, leaving behind one of her slippers for Prince Charming to find and momentarily confuse for an avant-garde drinking glass. Ella maintains her good spirits and eventually strikes up a friendship with a stranger in the woods who turns out to be the Prince. The ensuing search for the foot the slipper fits whips the village into an uproar and leaves audiences giddy.
ACME Hollywood West
At ACME Hollywood West, professional funny folk bust through the spotlight of an intimate, 99-seat venue to bust audiences’ guts during improv- and sketch-comedy performances. Often dubbed the “West Coast SNL,” Hollywood Saturday Night broadcasts live as a celebrity host attempts to crack funny bones through new sketches from top comedy writers and ACME performers. Each show also includes a musical guest with the ability to make whoopee cushion sounds with their lips as they play. In Hollywood Dream Role, an improvised movie unfolds onstage as a celebrity guest is forced to act out the part of a lifetime with no script, set, or makeup artist to cover their vestigial tentacles. Audiences can also opt to ogle top comedians in the Hollywood Stands Up show or risk laughing themselves to death during the mystery improv Murder by ACME! As performers create and move the plot along, the audience follows, ready to correctly identify the killer or frame their date at the drop of the final curtain.
