Penned by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev, Cinderella adapts Charles Perrault’s classic take on the fairy tale to the stage for a night of graceful dancing and beautiful melodies. Staged by Ballet Memphis dancer and choreographic assistant Steven McMahon, the show’s music melds the tale’s inherent romance with Prokofiev’s dissonant crescendos and jarring xylophone harmonies, updating storybook magic with a modernist aesthetic. Opulent sets borrowed from the London City Ballet frame elegant dances and beautiful costumes recall the courtly dress of the 19th century. Originally built as a lavish 1920s vaudeville venue, the Orpheum Theatre’s gorgeous interior features an intricate gilding, crystal chandeliers, and a monumental proscenium adorned with a giant red curtain that closes to signal the ends of acts and waves to taunt show-going bulls.
