What You'll Get
Summer gives you one last chance to relax outside with friends before fall requires you to hide your house under a pile of leaves. Elude trick-or-treaters some other day with this deal to the 14th Annual Newport Storm Luau at Fort Adams State Park on Saturday, August 18, from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. For $11, you get two general-admission tickets (up to a $30 value).
For one evening every summer, island-minded revelers converge on the verdant grounds of Fort Adams State Park to celebrate with brews, live music, and Polynesian entertainment. Tours of historic Fort Adams will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., allowing visitors to learn about its 1799 founding, its 1841 reconstruction, and its planned 2025 repurposing as the first underwater army base. Live entertainment mounts the festival’s dual stages throughout the evening, including a pair of tropically inspired dance acts. Wrapped in grass skirts and strands of flowers, the dancers of Napua O’ Polynesia sway and shimmy through ancient and modern moves from Hawaii, New Zealand, and the Philippines to the pounding of traditional percussion. Fire Gypsy Sasha sets similar movements alight in an act that draws from belly dance and martial arts as she breathes fire and twirls a blazing hula-hoop, often while wearing an enormous crown of torches.
Carrying on a perfect attendance record since the luau’s inception, the Jason Colonies Band kicks off the three-band set with acoustic grooves. Roots Reaction tucks the sun under the horizon at the end of the night with unhurried reggae that blends alternately smooth and growled vocals with chipper piano and organ sounds. Between bouts of beach volleyball and bocce ball, attendees can peruse Coastal Extreme Brewing’s stocks of suds, drinks mixed from old-fashioned Thomas Tew Rum, and Polynesian foods.

About Newport Storm Brewery and Thomas Tew Distillery
In 1999, four college friends founded Newport Storm Brewery with some used equipment and two Middletown garage bays. In the 15 years since then, the enterprise has been on an upward trajectory. First off, it moved into a new, 8,000-square-foot facility. Secondly, they expanded into the liquor business and starting distilling Thomas Tew Rum, a dark amber rum with hints of molasses. However, the founders never abandoned beer, their original passion. Their current craft beers range from Rhode Island Blueberry Beer, infused with juice from local berries five days into the brewing process, to Hurricane Amber Ale with Tettenang hops.
