The Scouting Report
On Halloween, Colgate will attempt to exorcise some demons when it takes on the Fordham Rams, who handed the Raiders their worst loss of the 2014 season. This time around, though, Colgate should have their star quarterback back under center, who led the team to a 5–2 record last season when he was healthy. He’s already flashed his potential this year during the squad’s spring game in April, which saw him toss three touchdowns during a very well-balanced matchup on both sides of the ball. Aside from the players wearing extra skeletons instead of pads, the Halloween showdown against Fordham will also have some extra buzz since it falls on family weekend, when off-the-field festivities—including a kid’s costume contest—will keep spirits high throughout game day.
“Unbeaten, untied, unscored upon, and uninvited.” That was the battle cry for Colgate football in 1932, a year that saw the then Red Raiders outscore opponents 264-0. Despite the flawless effort, the Raiders did not receive an invite to the 1933 Rose Bowl or college football’s annual shrimp boil. The snub left a bitter taste in the university’s collective mouth.
Still, it was a historic season, and one the football program carries with it today while competing in the Patriot League. Most of the school’s 25 varsity squads join the football team in the Patriot League, and many of them have had historic seasons of their own. Heated rivalries with other universities weave a common thread through Colgate sports—the hockey team, for instance, has one with Cornell, and many Raiders teams battle Syracuse for regional supremacy.
