College Football National Championship
Who plays for it: At the end of the regular season, the top four teams in the country square off in a pair of semifinal playoff games, with the winners of those games advancing to the National Championship. During the inaugural playoffs in 2015, the Ohio St. Buckeyes emerged as champions by defeating the Oregon Ducks in the title game.
Determining the top teams: A selection committee comprised of former coaches, student-athletes, journalists, and athletic directors compiles rankings throughout the season. It analyzes teams based on their strength of schedule, head-to-head results, past championships, and other factors, and whichever four teams are ranked highest at the end of the regular season advance to the playoffs.
The Trophy: Checking in at 26.5 inches tall and 35 pounds, the National Championship Trophy is composed of 24-karat gold, bronze, and stainless steel. It has a detachable, oblong-shaped base, making it easier for players to hoist it in the air. At the top, a metallic football sports four laces, which represent the four playoff teams.
