- Two $2 bets (a $4 value)
- Two exclusive harness tours (a $20 value)
Renowned among racing fans for hosting the Virginia Derby, Colonial Downs Racetrack draws crowds to cheer on stampeding thoroughbreds and harness racers, all while enjoying posh amenities. During the fall season, must-see races include the mixed-breed card on September 18, the Virginia Harness Day of Champions November 5, and the race against the clock, in which horses attempt to solve a puzzle in under 15 minutes. Spectators can also ascend to the Turf Club, which offers a panoramic view of the homestretch and finish line. With a buffet of seasonal fare as well as a full bar (not included with this Groupon), the Turf Club fills bellies in swank surroundings while private tableside televisions keep diners in view of tracktop happenings; if the buffet is unavailable, Groupon customers will receive a $32 credit toward the a la carte menu. Those new to the racing can visit the Trackside Fan Education Center to learn about how to make bets and analyze tip sheets, which clue in insiders to past performances and which horses are actually disguised zebras. After dinner, an exclusive harness tour leads Groupon holders on a behind-the-scenes glimpse at track life.
Guests should note that the Turf Club has a business-casual dress code that prohibits tank tops and flip-flops without exceptions.
Although Colonial Downs Racetrack sometimes offers discounts online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
Colonial Downs Racetrack
Home of the Virginia Derby each summer, Colonial Downs Racetrack upholds the age old Southern tradition of horse racing with a pair of impressive tracks. At 180 feet wide, the Secretariat Turf Course plays host to the derby as well as other summer thoroughbred races. Measuring at 1.25 miles, the outside dirt track is the second largest in the country—dwarfed only by Belmont Park— and plays host the pacers and trotters in the fall harness races. As Virginia's only site for pari-mutuel betting, Colonial Downs attracts droves of racing fans and wandering derby hats throughout the season. Once inside the gates, visitors can enjoy the sights and sounds from the outdoor grandstand or relax in one of Colonial Downs' club and suite seating options, most of which offer dining and betting services, TVs linked to off-track races, and unobstructed birds-eye views of either track outside.
