The Scouting Report
With banners of their past successes suspended from World Arena’s rafters, the Colorado College Tigers skate into the 2013–14 season as a member of the newly formed National Collegiate Hockey Conference. On October 18, the Tigers skate into the first game of the regular season looking to dismantle the University of Minnesota Duluth. The Tigers once again rally behind 15-year veteran head coach Scott Owens, who last year surpassed the 300-win mark.
At his disposal, coach Owens touts a roster of talented players, including captain Eamonn McDermott and top returning scorer, Alexander Krushelnyski. Last season, Krushelnyski notched 15 goals and 28 assists, proving himself a bigger problem for opposing netminders than goalie masks made from melting ice.
Colorado College Athletics
The athletic program at Colorado College can trace its traditions all the way back to the 19th Century. It was Christmas Day, 1882, when a group of students gathered on a makeshift field to watch their fellow Tigers defeat a team of local firemen in a new sport picking up steam on the East Coast—football. As an early adopter of the sport, Colorado College holds the distinction of being one-half of the first-ever intercollegiate football game played west of the Mississippi River. The Tigers played their first game on Washburn Field in 1898, and that field has remained the physical embodiment of an athletic tradition that spans three consecutive centuries and numerous weeks where groundskeepers forgot to turn the page on their wall calendars. Today, Colorado College’s men and women continue this competitive tradition in 17 sports, ranging from basketball and ice hockey to lacrosse and cross country.
