The Scouting Report
A year ago, the Rockies offense was one of the best in baseball, compiling the third-highest team batting average and plating more than 700 runs. Thanks to that offensive firepower, the Rockies were especially tough to beat at Coors Field, where they mashed their way to a 45-36 record. In less than two weeks, the team’s sluggers will step back into the batter’s box for the first home stands of the 2014 season. Special promotions add to the festive atmosphere of those initial games. On April 5, fans may receive collectible jerseys, and on April 20, they can pick up a bobblehead gnome to put in their garden or next to their bed to ward off foul balls.
The Colorado Rockies joined the National League as an expansion team in 1993, playing at Mile High Stadium. On April 9, 1993, they brought Major League Baseball to Denver with a thrilling Rockies victory in front of a record-setting crowd of 80,227 fans. The Rockies throttled the Montreal Expos 11–4, and high scores quickly became a trend for home games.
In 1995, the Rockies moved into the one-of-a-kind Coors Field which established itself as a hitter’s paradise due in large part to its location above sea level. To this day, the region’s thin air allows batted balls and paper airplanes carrying the team’s bunt signs to travel noticeably farther than they would in other places. To mark this unique trait, Coors Field has a single strand of purple seats in the 20th row of its upper deck, which stand out amidst the rest of the parks’ green seats to signify the exact spot where the city is one mile above sea level.
