The Scouting Report
Opposing pitchers must look at the Rockies’ batting order the way a gazelle views a swarming pride of lions. Simply put, the Rockies boast the best offense in the National League by a healthy margin. While the thin Denver air and the gravitational pull of nearby mountains may inflate the team’s home-run total—more than 100 so far this year—the club also leads the NL in batting average and is a close second in on-base percentage, neither of which can be written off as a product of home-field altitude. The team looks to ride their hot bats into a successful second half of the 2014 season.
The Colorado Rockies joined the National League as an expansion team in 1993 playing at Mile High Stadium. Major League Baseball came to Denver on April 9, 1993, and provided a thrilling Rockies victory in front of a record-setting crowed of 80,227. The Rockies throttled the Montreal Expos 11–4, and high scores quickly became a trend for home games.
In 1995, the Rockies moved into the one-of-a-kind Coors Field which established itself as a hitter’s paradise due in large part to its location above sea level. To this day, the region’s thin air allows batted balls and paper airplanes carrying the team’s bunt signs to travel noticeably farther than they would in other places. To mark this unique trait, Coors Field has a single strand of purple seats in the 20th row of its upper deck, which stand out amidst the rest of the parks’ green seats to signify the exact spot where the city is one mile above sea level.
