The stage savants at Columbus Civic Theater thrill audiences with productions of classic western and world theater. A talented cast brings to life George Bernard Shaw’s timeless story, Arms and the Man , a lively satire that examines the consequences of romanticizing both marriage and war by exposing the foolhardy heroism and outlandish romantic gestures of its characters using the magic of theater in lieu of the Philosopher’s Stone. Engaging in the verbal volleys and razor-sharp wit that are hallmarks of Shaw’s plays, actors wrestle with demons and bring dramas to their dénouement against the backdrop of the 1885 Serbo-Bulgarian War. Founded by artistic director Richard Alpert in 2008, Columbus Civic Theater strives to educate the community about theater’s rich tradition.
