Coppélia

Coppélia’s comic tale of love, wizardry, and perfectly lifelike dolls is based on two lesser-known stories by Nutcracker author E.T.A. Hoffmann. In it, a toymaker, Dr. Coppélius, played by Jeff Gribler – a former principal dancer for the Pennsylvania Ballet – creates Coppélia, a doll who looks so real that young Swanilda tries to befriend her, and Swanilda’s boyfriend, Franz, attempts to woo her by flexing a whole bunch. Angry with her boyfriend’s unfaithfulness, Swanilda sneaks into the toymaker’s house with her friends to investigate his workshop. What they find is a whole room filled with realistic, life-sized mechanic dolls—Coppélia among them. When the toymaker returns, Swanilda’s friends flee, and Swanilda herself pretends to be Coppélia. Then Franz arrives to declare his love for the doll, giving the toymaker the chance to enact his master plan: to transfer Franz’s soul to the doll. What ensues is a tale of misunderstanding, magic, and true love all set to a sprightly, pastoral score score by Léo Delibes.
