Cirque La Playa’s Slapstick Sonata

An empty warehouse in Prague is long abandoned by its daytime employees. Suddenly, the lights click on, and the night-shift workers show up. Although they plan on slogging through their typical routines, just like they do every night, the warehouse soon explodes into a riot of aerial acrobatics, contemporary clowning, and springy tumbles off seesaws.

This is Slapstick Sonata, in which the artists of Cirque La Playa join those of Circo Aereo to elevate slapstick comedy to new heights—literally. The cast of acrobats, puppeteers, dancers, actors, and musicians elicits gasps and guffaws alike, via gravity-defying acrobatic feats and deceptively simple warehouse props like ladders. A soundtrack composed by Mozart, Handel, and Shostakovich underlines each balletic movement with an elegant edge of poetry.

Count Basie Theatre

Upon entering the Count Basie Theatre, guests may feel as though they’ve slipped through a crack in time and ended up in the early 1900s. Opulent marble staircases and gold details immediately grab the eyes of visitors, evoking the decadence of Hollywood’s history and gently pulling guests toward the auditorium. There, the acoustically pleasing construction wins out as sound spreads and funnels through a sunburst dome embellished with a chandelier. These features have helped the Count Basie earn numerous accolades since it opened in 1926, including a nod from Pollstarmagazine, which listed it as one of the Top 100 Worldwide Theatre Venues.
