The Bluejays swoop into back-to-back weekend series against two Missouri Valley Conference rivals seeking to prevent a repeat of 2011, when Creighton captured a conference crown en route to its first NCAA tournament berth since 2007. Now in his ninth season as skipper, reigning conference Coach of the Year Ed Servais resumes his perch inside the team’s dugout, where he has so far amassed multiple university records, including most wins and most sneezes confused as bunt signals. Through the first month of the 2012 season, senior first baseman Nick Judkins has seized the reins of the Bluejays offense, collecting 15 hits and 9 RBIs in just nine games. On defense, relief pitcher Reese McGraw has stormed out of the bullpen with two wins and a save—feats strong enough to earn him the conference’s Pitcher of the Week honors on March 5 and dibs on top bunk for the clubhouse’s Friday night slumber parties.
Home to the College World Series, TD Ameritrade Park Omaha celebrates its first birthday this spring as it matures into the full-time home stadium for Creighton baseball. Up to 24,000 fans can pack the park’s trio of decks and bleacher seats, hemmed in by a spacious, 360-degree concourse that also hosts an array of concession stands, where—like in the Large Hadron Collider—bread crashes into mustard packets to create hot dogs.
