The Vagina Monologues
When Eve Ensler’s OBIE Award–winning Vagina Monologues premiered in 1996, it started more than just a conversation about women and their bodies—it started a movement. Weaving together the impassioned tales of women from around the world, many of whom had struggled with and triumphed over gender-based violence, the episodic play embraced and celebrated womanhood in a way that none before had. Ensler, who harnessed the sensitive and at times taboo subject matter from interviews with 200 women, originally starred in the play, but later welcomed celebrities including Whoopi Goldberg and Melissa Etheridge to perform in various productions. The Vagina Monologues has now been seen around the globe, with women from all walks of life taking the stage, corralling rave reviews and galvanizing audience members by balancing humor and harrowing drama.
Another way the play galvanizes the public: with V-Day, an annual nonprofit movement that raises awareness about violence against women and gathers funds to end it. The Vagina Monologues performances each take part in the fundraising as well. A portion of the proceeds raised by Cupcake Theater’s performance—which features a rotating cast of more than 35 actresses from film and TV—will go toward Peace Over Violence, a shelter for women and children victimized by domestic violence.
The brains behind Cupcake Theater believe that the mission of good theater is to take the audience on an emotional journey. Their bread and butter: professional comedies, dramas, musicals, musicians, and theatrical experimentation performed by renowned professional Hollywood actors. Their brand-new performance space located in N. Hollywood also wows audiences with its modern design and high ceilings, while still maintaining an intimate and "cupcake" size feel.
