The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion’s outdoor amphitheater was renovated and expanded to include thousands of new seats, a larger canopy structure, and a top-notch sound system that makes the Houston Symphony’s perfectly punctuated staccatos sound superb. Direct brass ear horns toward the melodic strings of the Houston Symphony during "Poperazzi," a celebration of opera’s Italian pedigree that pairs the hometown maestros with a pop-opera vocal trio from Las Vegas. Having honed their operatic chops in the ancient Renaissance ballrooms of their hometown, the trio will fill the air with arias from La Traviata and The Barber of Seville between iconic arrangements from The Godfather and taking breaks to inhale falsetto-boosting helium.

Music director Hans Graf leads his well-tuned troops through fields littered with lyrical melodies and Hungarian folk rhythms during Brahms' Violin Concerto. Virtuosic concert violinist James Ehnes joins the symphony for the night’s program, which augments the potency of Brahms' most tender masterworks with a brilliant display of fireworks and a stirring rendition of Dvořák’s Symphony no. 6. As Halloween approaches, string-plucking specters rise from coffins beneath the stage to accompany the symphony through "Hocus Pocus Pops." Children dressed as pumpkins bob up and down to the chilling sonatas, and masked audience members let their chain saws roar in lieu of applause. Seated in the venue's orchestra section for all three performances, guests are close enough to smell the resin and sweat from epic onstage bow fights. Gates to the Fidelity Investments Plaza open at 7 p.m. for "Poperazzi" and Brahms' Violin Concerto and at 6 p.m. for "Hocus Pocus Pops."
