The Scouting Report

A season ago, the Mavericks missed the playoffs for the first time since 2000. Though due largely to injuries, the lack of postseason play led to a major offseason shakeup in Dallas–on opening day of this season, the roster featured nine new faces. So far, the makeover has been a major success, even if early-season practices began with the players reciting their name, hometown, and favorite color.

Now through 50-plus games, the re-energized Mavs find themselves back in a familiar position: primed for a playoff run in the wildly competitive Western Conference. Later in March, a trio of postseason contenders will waltz into American Airlines Center looking for playoff berths of their own. That includes the conference rival Clippers on March 27–a team that has already beat the Mavericks in a pair of close, high-scoring match-ups earlier this season.

Dallas Mavericks

In 1979, millionaire Donald J. Carter and Mavericks' founding president, Norm Sonju, began making efforts to secure an NBA team in Dallas. His dream became a reality at the 1980 All-Star game, when league owners voted to admit the new franchise for an entry fee of $12 million and Mr. Carter's entire baseball-card collection. The newly formed Mavs experienced quick success, making the postseason six times during their first decade. The 1990s proved not so kind, however; the team failed to make the playoffs even once. That ineptitude came to a prompt halt with the start of the new millennium, when, under a fresh and outspoken ownership regime, the team set off a string of 12 straight playoff appearances, highlighted by its first NBA title in 2011.
