The Scouting Report As the Professional Arena Soccer League’s defending Central Division champions, the Sidekicks enter a new season in pursuit of their first title since 2001. On November 17, just two weeks after the season opens, and just 11 days before players bicycle kick dishes around Thanksgiving tables, the team begins competing in the sixth installment of the Open Cup—an open knockout-style tournament that brings together indoor soccer teams from several leagues.
Then, in late December, the Sidekicks infuse the holiday season with an extra dash of excitement during a showdown with one of the league’s expansion teams, the Tulsa Revolution. Both match-ups feature $2 hotdogs, beers, and sodas, and both give fans a chance to witness the skills of newcomer Nestor Hernandez. A year ago, as a rookie with Chicago, the forward earned a spot on the All-PASL team by scoring the second-most goals in the league with 38.
A new iteration of the decorated soccer squad of the same name that disbanded in 2004, the Dallas Sidekicks hope to rekindle a championship soccer tradition in the Professional Arena Soccer League. Living up to their proud lineage will be no small task; the Sidekicks were one of indoor soccer’s dominant teams in the ‘80s and ‘90s, winning four championships and five division titles between 1986 and 2004, with the aid of famed Brazilian players Tatu and Sagu. The Sidekicks rumble across the turf at Allen Arena with the help of a loyal fanbase and the Purple Chaos, who show their allegiance by wearing purple bodysuits to every game and adhering to a strict grape-juice-only diet.
