The Scouting Report
The Israeli national hockey team is currently ranked among the top 30 teams in the world, and in November, it will compete in the Olympic qualification games. But since the Olympic ice isn’t even ready for for the final zamboni’d layer of solid-gold ice, the Israeli squad will tune up during a visit to Texas on September 12. During a charity exhibition game, they’ll face off against a lineup of Dallas Stars alumni and fan favorites, including former goalie Marty Turco and current TV analyst Brent Severyn. The Israeli team will counter the Stars’ star power with some elite talent of their own, including Sergie Frenkel, Israel’s all-time leading point scorer, and goalie Yevgeni Gusin, the country’s all-time leader in games played.
Supporters of Hockey Israel
Though Israel didn’t see its first hockey rink open until 1986, the sport has certainly found its way into the country’s national spotlight. Today, more than 1,000 players are registered across Israel, competing in both ice and inline hockey leagues. To ensure that steady growth persists, Supporters of Hockey Israel organizes events within the USA to spread awareness of and raise funds for the sport’s continued development in Israel. That effort certainly seems to be paying off, especially considering the Israeli national squad is ranked among the top 30 teams in the world.
