Live music is a huge improvement on canned music, which takes up valuable pantry space and often spoils into noxious free jazz. Keep it fresh with this GrouponLive deal to see Danú at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts in Storrs. For $27, you get two tickets for mezzanine seating on Saturday, March 17, at 8 p.m. (a $54 value).
Named after the Celtic mother goddess of the land, Danú aurally embodies the majesty of the Emerald Isle during a St. Patrick's Day concert of traditional Irish song. Lead singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh was raised on an Irish Gaelic–speaking island in County Cork, where she spent her childhood honing her evocative alto pipes through sean-nós, or old-style, songs alongside local vocalists. Muireann propels Danú's melodies with her full voice and spritely tin whistle while prancing flute solos intertwine with bow-breaking fiddling. Festive thumps from the traditional bodhrán drum, rustic acoustic plucking, and freewheeling accordion round out the euphony. Run by the University of Connecticut, Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts extends its educating mission to the community, topping its stage with more than 25 acclaimed artists each year and a fresh coat of peanut butter each night. Patrons 21 and up are invited to enjoy a pint of green beer (not included with this Groupon) from the bar in celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
