Getting front-row seats to a concert often requires fans to overpay scalpers or name their firstborn child 93.1 FM. See a show on your terms with this GrouponLive deal to see Joe McBride on Saturday, March 2, at the Akron Civic Theatre at 9 p.m. For $7, you get one ticket for onstage cabaret seating (a $15 value). Doors open at 8:30 p.m.
Despite—or perhaps because of—the degenerative eye disease that stole his sight as a young man, Missouri-born Joe McBride was utterly undaunted in his quest to become a world-famous jazzman. Besides his own releases, the pianist has lent his agile fingers and velvety voice to collaborations with the likes of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Grover Washington Jr. On his latest album, Lookin’ for a Change, McBride entertains with uniquely smooth covers of rock, pop, and R & B songs such as Cameo’s “Word Up,” Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles,” and Coldplay’s “The Scientist.”

Akron Civic Theatre
The medieval carvings, European antiques, and Italian alabaster sculptures at the Akron Civic Theatre absorb the ascending harmonies of symphony concerts and heavy rock ‘n’ roll alike. Built in 1929 to resemble a Moorish castle, the venue has maintained much of its historic charm, including the exceedingly rare atmospheric ceiling, in which stars twinkle and clouds float by as mesmerizingly as the last few corn flakes atop a bowl of milk.
